Education in Somalia

The Federal Republic of Somalia, also called Somalia is located in what is known as the Horn of Africa, which forms the eastern tip or peninsula of Africa. Ethiopia, Djibouti and Kenya form the land borders and Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden form the water boundaries of Somalia.

The climate of Somalia remains hot all through the year due to its equatorial location. Rainfall is irregular and periodic. The maximum temperature ranges between 30 to 40 degrees Celsius, however elevated regions of Somalia experience lower temperature as compared to the plains.

The Education System of Somalia is governed by the Ministry of Education. There are various options for primary, secondary, higher and university level of education, including programs and projects to increase the literacy rate of the country. Technical/Vocational education and training (TVET) is offered at both the post-primary and post-secondary levels.

Education opportunities in Somalia are mainly available in major urban areas, though few schools are also located in rural areas. The duration of primary school education is 4 years. In primary schools students learn  9 subjects. From grade 2, English is a second language subject. Middle school also take 4 years for completion. Subject taught in middle schools include Somali, Islamic studies, English, Math, Science, Social Studies, Geography and History etc. The students who successfully completes middle school education are eligible to apply for secondary schools to study for another 4 years. Completion of secondary schooling opens avenues for further university education and post secondary education.
